Uefa Super Cup 2017

Man Utd player analysis

With the new season only FOUR FRICKING DAYS AWAY (woo) tonight's UEFA Super Cup was the last chance to take a look at a bunch of players who will figure in a lot of peoples FPL teams.

Man United may have ultimately lost this battle, but the question is... how did they do on the pitch?

David De Gea - 8

Nothing he could do for the two goals and made great saves from Benzema and Kroos and tipped a smashed Bale effort onto the bar in the second half and denied Assensio a goal. 6 saves in total.

Darmian - 6

Very poor in the opening 20 minutes lost his marker from a corner as Real hit the bar and gave the ball away 2 minutes later in his own box allowing a Madrid shot at goal. Improved in the second half looking more solid and made a few defensive interventions.

Smalling – 7

Solid defensive performance and done well in his aerial battles. He made well timed tackles and crucial interventions in the Utd 6-yard box to deny Madrid on several occasions.

Lindelof – 5

Was at fault for Madrid’s first goal as he was caught ball watching allowing Casemiro to ghost in behind him and score. Regained his composure in the second half and made a goal saving tackle.

Valencia – 6

Didn’t make any mistakes but failed to impact the game only managing a few forays forward that resulted in crosses into the box.

Pogba – 5

Not a performance to saviour wasteful attack in the first half failing to play in Mkhitaryan on the overlap. Had a few weak efforts at goal that where straight at the keeper and gave the ball away far too much.

Matic – 7

United’s best outfield player broke up the play expertly and kept united ticking with simple balls and movement into space providing an outlet for players in possession. Assisted with his second half strike that was spilled for Lukaku to tap in.

Herrera – 6

Energetic in midfield but failed to make an attacking impact and couldn’t get near Isco who was on another level (subbed off 55)

Lingard – 5

Tepid first half performance failed to trouble the Madrid defence and looked slow and laboured in possession, didn’t affect the game in anyway and was subbed off at half time.

Lukaku – 7

Could easily have been a 6 out of 10 performance but he did register a scoring return when all was said and done. Looked very isolated in the first half and showed poor awareness to play Man Utd offside. In the second half, he gave the ball away on two or 3 occasions, headed straight at the keeper and blazed a sitter over from 6 yards – but he did what Rom does and bagged his goal tapping in from 6 yards out.

Mkhitaryan – 6

Showed flashes off what he can do running into some good attacking spaces and playing Rashford in with two great through balls one of which should have resulted in a goal.

Rashford – 7

Introduced at half time and brought much needed pace and directness to Utd. Was a willing runner and attacked the Madrid defence putting in some dangerous balls, ran into great space to go one on one with the keeper but should have converted.

Felliani – 7

Typical Felliani performance from the bench was a handful in the air, holding the ball up well and dispossessing Madrid on several occasions to set up Utd attacks. Not the most stylish performance but was effective and produced a lot more than Herrera managed in 55 minutes.

Man Utd - 6

Looked out of there depth against probably the best club side in the world. Lining up with a 4-3-3 system they were poor in the first half, looked laboured and short of ideas in possession. The second half introduction of Rashford gave much needed pace and directness and Utd looked a far better team. Hard to take much from this game but it does give pauses for concern on Utd in defence and how effective their attacking assets will start the season.
