Number four in out Top Value Defenders series we look at a man who is so revered in some parts of the world, they named a creek after him. Maybe.
Ignore the fact he has ears like a couple of tenderised rump steaks, Craig Dawson had a good 2016/2017 for West Brom by all accounts. Deployed at right back all season he has stumped up with 4 goals in both of the last 2 seasons for the Baggies. He has appeared in an impressive 75 of West Brom's last 76 PL games in this period showing that he is a nailed-on starter in Tony Pulis team. He is not the most exotic player in the world but is very solid and his attacking capabilities serve a dual purpose because although he plays right back and gets up and down the attacking flanks he is built like a natural centre-back and is a scoring threat from set pieces. Last season he kept 6 clean sheets but if Pulis can rediscover his notoriously tight defence this number will improve next season.
Dawson isn’t sexy or suave we all know that but he’s a ruddy good, fairly priced FPL asset and offers a differential option to his equally priced defensive colleague Gareth McAuley. Whilst McAuley outscored him last season, in all likelihood that will not be repeated in 2017/2018. With Tony Pulis still the man in charge at the Hawthorns next season we have a pretty good idea what to expect from West Brom, they will keep it tight at the back with the majority of their goals coming from set piece situations.

In addition to being a goal threat Dawson also created 21 goal scoring chances last term showing he has the ability to get forward and cause the opposition defence problems, with greater fortune this will translate into assists. The final piece in the jigsaw of Dawson as an FPL asset is West Brom's opening 5 Fixtures. Games against Bournemouth, Burnley, Stoke, Brighton and West Ham all offer a great chance of clean sheets and even attacking returns.
